Vol. 2. No. 13 – 29 March 1999
Interesting Reading:
Here’s some articles, web sites, or books that I’ve found interesting.
- From InfoWar to Knowledge Warfare: Preparing for the Paradigm Shift
Intelligence Online
- I stumbled across this article in my online travels and found it fascinating. It was one of those reads that I just had to print out so I could read it at my leisure while disconnected (on an airplane). There is a lot to think about and digest in this article, and I won’t pretend to cover all the important stuff, but here’s a couple of things I took away from this article. As the title would suggest there is a large focus on the military and intelligence aspects of KM (general lack of clear focus on it), but there is also ample focus on the business aspects. We (KM practitioners) spend a lot of time talking about enterprise this and enterprise that, but when was the last time you heard anyone talking about national or economic KM? There is also a lot of talk in KM circles about ‘know-how’, and rightly so, but the author points out the value of ’sense-making’ with respect to KM. You’ll just have to read it to appreciate it.

- From data to knowledge
CIO Magazine
- The author posits that we are to focused on the data itself instead of on turning that data into information and eventually knowledge. Through several examples he shows how we have the technology, we simply don’t apply people and their insights to the data and information to turn it into valuable knowledge. We gather but we don’t make sense of the data.

- You Think Tomaytoes, I Think Tomahtoes
CIO Magazine
- A look at Bay Networks KM system. If you want living proof of the value of business solution focused KM then read this article. Hat’s off to the folks at Dale and the other folks at Bay Networks that built (and are still building) this system.

- Self-serving Sites
CIO Magazine
- A good article on how companies are and how others can gain a competitive advantage through customer self services web sites.

- Lotus Delivers Notes R5, inks partnerships
Infoworld
- Yes, it has finally been released. Based on what I’ve seen and experienced, this is an important step forward in the Notes/Domino product. Out of the box, Notes/Domino is not a KM solution, but with some of the add-on products, and tools coming out later this year, anyone that has or decides to invest in Notes/Domino can create a viable KM solution. Even if not used for KM, it should give MSFT a run for their money in the enterprise messaging space. IMHO, installation and management are much simpler than that of Exchange.

- Enterprise Knowledge Portals to Become the Shared Desktop of the Future
IDC press release
- I know, I know, a press release. It’s here because I think it has some interesting and perhaps valuable things to say. While you are reading this keep asking yourself this one question; what makes the portal craze different from the push craze? I won’t taint your thinking with my opinion at this point, but if you want to send me your thoughts I’d be glad to publish them (with or without attribution).

- Corporate Portals To Become Primary Interface to Information in the Workplace by 2001
Delphi Group press release
- I had to mention this one for the same reasons I mentioned the IDC release. I have not seen either of these studies and don’t know the methods used to form the authors conclusions, so I won’t comment on either of the studies contents. Let me add this thought, if organizations focused more attention to information management practices, would corporate portals be necessary?

- CorporatePortal.com
- While we are on the portal subject, you should take a look and bookmark this new site dedicated to EIP’s (Enterprise Information Portals) or Corporate Portals.

Products/Tools:
I’ll try and point you to interesting products, tools, and companies that are dabbling in the KM space. A (P) after a product name indicates that it connects people to people, and an (I) indicates that it connects people to information. These categories are based on my definition of KM.
- Verge Insight from Verge Software (I)(P)
- Verge had their official corporate and product launch earlier this week at the International Knowledge Management Symposium (IKMS) in San Diego. Their flagship product Insight is intended to help organizations put their enterprise information, experience and expertise into context. The key aspects of Insight are its ability to automatically capture, organize, and discover often hidden information, resources and relationships throughout the organization. Insight’s intelligent Discovery capability integrates with Lotus Notes, the World Wide Web, corporate intranets, and data from any ODBC-compliant sources.

If you’ve seen or are using a cool and useful product that falls into the KM space (or close to it), let me know about it, I’ll include it here and you’ll get the credit for it.
