Vol. 2 No. 1 – 04 January 1999
Interesting Reading:
Here’s some books (see the KM News web site for books), web sites, or articles that I’ve found interesting.
- The Knowledge Factor
CIO Magazine
- A really good article highlighting the 4 areas (their areas not necessarily mine) that need to be addressed when undertaking a knowledge management project. Things that need to be addressed are the culture of sharing (actually not sharing), development of realistic measures of knowledge value and project success, processes that capture, store and deliver relevant knowledge, and action based on relevant knowledge. The article provides specific examples of how organizations have addressed these four areas.

- Trends To Watch In ’99
Information Week
- As if we didn’t already know it, KM is a trend to watch in 1999. The author confuses information management with KM, but that’s ok because they are related.

- Lotus, Compaq spawn knowledge management packs
Computerworld
- Lotus and Compaq offer another bundling of hardware and software to address KM. This new bundling is two applications, Knowledger.Innovation to help company’s track how changes affect the bottom line, and Prevail Knowledge Center that focuses on best practices among sales teams. If anyone has seen any info on or used the first bundling last fall let me know, I’m curious how it has worked out.

- Knowledge ‘czars’ fall from grace
Computerworld
- Maybe they have, maybe they haven’t. I don’t think we can make any sort of generalized statement that CKO’s are here to stay or on the wane. Depending on the culture of an organization a CKO may be relevant or not. The one thing that is true is that KM will become a fundamental part of all business processes, eventually.

- The calm after the storm
Computerworld
- Calm computing and information fabrics. The terms are cool, and the future opportunity even cooler. Read this interview with John Seely Brown to find out what they are, and what they mean to KM. Here’s a hint, just think of it, a computer sifting through information and recognizing just which piece of information you need at that moment.

- On The Edge
Infoworld
- Will 1999 be the year of KM applications, the author of this opinion piece seems to think so. I hope he’s not disappointed. I can’t help but remember all the “year of the LAN” predictions in the early part of the decade. I don’t disagree with the prognostications, I just think that it is a terribly limiting view to think of KM only in terms of technology.

- Swissair rolls out intranet applications for knowledge management, self-service HR
Intranet Design
- A brief article on how CTP and Swissair built a basic but functional KM system. It ain’t rocket science, but if it meets their needs I say hurrah.

- Exchange And The Domino Effect: Messaging Seat Wars Heat Up
Inter@ctive Week
- If your uninterested in the Lotus vs. Microsoft messaging and collaboration battle don’t read this article. On the other hand if you care, it is a well balanced look at this cat fight in progress. In the end, I’m not sure that the user will win, but we shall see.

- Open Text Picks Up Lava
Inter@ctive Week
- Not to be dissuaded from their acquisition binge, Open Text has entered into an agreement to acquire Lava Systems. Why should we care? Just take a look at what Lava does, and think about the ramifications of directly integrating ERP systems with KM systems. To me, this makes much more sense than the quest to purchase PC Docs – kinda like ‘tired’ vs.’wired’.

- Lotus Rolls Out SameTime Software
Inter@ctive Week
- The long awaited SameTime synchronous software is here. It will be interesting to see if companies adopt SameTime before it is incorporated into Notes/Domino 5. I think the real value will come when/if SameTime becomes a core component of Notes/Domino.
