Vol. 2. No. 10 – 08 March 1999
Interesting Reading:
Here’s some articles, web sites, or books that I’ve found interesting.
- What’s Your Strategy For Managing Knowledge?
Harvard Business Review (subscription required)
- This is an excellent article using the consulting industry as an example, but is relevant for every business (for profit and not for profit). The premise of the article is that there are two basic approaches to KM, Codification and Personalization, and that the approach taken is or should be based on your organizations overall business strategy. It does not advocate an either or usage, but that one form (Codification or Personalization) will be predominant, in an 80/20% split. If you don’t have a subscription to HBR you can buy a copy of this article for approx. $6 online.

- Knowledge Management and Competition in the Consulting Industry
California Management Review (subscription required)
- Certainly not as insightful as the HBR article above, but still worth the read. The article is directed at the consulting industry not just using it as an example. The parallels between this and the HBR article above are interesting and at times confusing. This author talks in terms of Decentralized and Centralized systems, not Personalization and Codification, and at times tends to diminish the value of the Personalization/Decentralized approach. The point that is lost is the value of KM in support of the organizations business strategy and identity, not just scale and repeatability. You can not find this article online, but I believe that you can order it from the CMR web site.

- Building a Self-Actualized Web
Wired News
- Documents haven’t changed much since they were first invented, and they aren’t much different even in digital form. This article covers XML and how it will bring the web into the “70′s”. It’s interesting how that this new and extraordinary technology (the web, HTML, etc.) has provided incredible value while at the same time actually being less advanced than some of its predecessor technology/processes.

- Narrative Knowledge
Intranet Design Magazine
- “KM isn’t about helping us to know more. It’s about helping us to understand.” A very good opinion piece (and the author has had several lately on KM) that focuses attention on the need and value of using story telling as a key part of KM.

- Zisman on Knowledge
JOHO
- Take it or leave it. I found this little piece amusing and thought I’d include it this week.
