Anniversary Issue — One Year of KM News

Interesting Reading:
Here’s some books (see the KM News web site for books), web sites, or articles that I’ve found interesting.

  • The Thrill of the Hunt
    CIO Magazine
    - A look at the importance of business intelligence as a strategic tool for decision making. It is about connecting people to information so they can gain a competitive advantage.

  • First Ever Knowledge Management Standards to be Created by AIIM International
    Infoseek Industry Watch
    - I try hard not to include press releases, but this one is very relevant. I’m sure many of you are aware of the Knowledge Management Consortium’s (KMC) efforts. They have recently joined AIIM, and are in the process of generating KM standards. I’ve followed KMC’s efforts for some time and remain unconvinced that standards for KM can or even should be developed. The question as I see it is: should any body propose (or dictate) how a given organization’s business processes function? It is relevant and important to develop standards for technology, but this effort appears to go well beyond technological standards. My opinion aside, I think it is important for KM practitioners to be aware of and involved in these types of initiatives.

  • Customer Culture
    Information Week
    - This is mostly an article about customer relationship management, but is directly related to KM in that CRM is often a piece of many organizations KM strategies. It is interesting that while not calling what they are doing KM, the examples cited in the article tend to echo what KM practitioners are finding. That is that with out any cultural change the systems won’t be successful, and that technology is an enabler not a means to an end.

  • Web opens enterprise portals
    Information Week
    - Another ‘E’ to add to our list; EIP or Enterprise Information Portals. If I hear the term portal once more I my just retch. Don’t get me wrong, this is an excellent article with lots of valuable information, even if it does confuse information with knowledge. I keep asking myself if I’m the only one that thinks the term portal is over used. There is no question that the technology (especially XML) and processes that are discussed in this article are important to the discipline of KM and will have a positive affect on an organizations ability to compete, lets just not get hooked by all the hype and buzz words. — Thanks go to George

  • Managing Knowledge Gives Power
    Communications World Online
    - An interesting article about the value of business communication in the KM dialog. The article is focused on business communicators and how they should approach KM, it also offers some valuable insights for KM practitioners. — Thanks go to Janet
