Vol. 2 No. 7 – 15 February 1999

Interesting Reading:

Here’s some books (see the KM News web site for books), web sites, or articles that I’ve found interesting.

  • Corporate matchmaking
    Electronic Buyers News’
    - What is your “Collaborative Coefficient”? The Meta Group has created a software tool that helps companies determine the best match for partnerships and other business alliances. The tool goes to the heart of inter-organizational collaboration.

  • Idea Management
    Intranet Design Magazine
    - I like this cynics view of KM, and agree with him to a point — I’m not going to rename this newsletter, at least not yet. The author uses the term ‘idea’ or ‘ideas’ where I would use creativity, but the point is the same. We already have very descriptive names for things that consultants and vendors are calling KM, like data and information management, and know-how. We can’t manage creativity (ideas), but we can manage innovation, a direct byproduct of the creative process.

  • Low-tech smarts — CEO’s Notebook
    Inc. Magazine Online
    - Knowledge Management isn’t just for large multi-national companies, it’s for every size company, and it doesn’t take some big bucks technology solution to be successful. One companies decidedly low tech approach was meetings with good old fashioned face to face communication.

  • The Smartest Little Company in America
    Inc. Magazine Online
    - This company uses the highest-tech system in the world, a person, as their KM system. There are many aspects to this article that are valuable, but I think the real lesson is the value of the human factor of making relevant connections between information and the people that need it.

  • Lotus delays release of Notes R5 by a month
    PCWeek
    - Yet another delay for the much anticipated R5 version of Notes/Domino. I’m sure we’ll get our hands on it soon enough, or should I say sooner than MSFT’s KM Product.

Product/Tools:

I’ll try and point you to interesting products, tools, and companies that are dabbling in the KM space.

  • NetMap from NetMap Solutions Pty Ltd
    - NetMap is a data visualization and analysis tool that allows users to mine the information in databases and present the relationships between the data in a visual manner. What is most interesting about the NetMap software is Orgmap, an application and methodology of NetMap used for improving knowledge sharing. Orgmap allows users to map the organizational relationships between people, and also between information. By doing this relationship mapping organizations can focus more attention on identification and management of tacit knowledge.
