Vol. 2. No.3 – 18 January 1999

Interesting Reading:

Here’s some books (see the KM News web site for books), web sites, or articles that I’ve found interesting.

  • Prime Time for Real Time?
    PCWeek
    - A very good article on online collaboration technologies. It is probably obvious from much of my commentary that I believe that synchronous communication mechanisms should be a fundamental part of any KM technology solution. This article provides a look a several technologies that provide a solid technical base for facilitating knowledge creation and management through real-time conversations.

  • Walker Issued patent for Net service
    CNet.com
    - An interesting patent has been issued to the intellectual property lab run by the founder of Priceline.com. This patent is for a concept of buying and selling expert opinions over the Internet. This is not specifically a KM related patent and potential service, but certainly could impact organizations that are currently offering this type of service in the KM space, like Teltec.

  • Cultural Evolution
    CIO Magazine
    - You OD people will love this article and everyone else should as well. This is a great article on organizational culture and how it can have a positive affect on the bottom line. In the KM world we often claim that culture is the biggest obstacle to successful KM initiatives. This article talks about how organizations are reinforcing positive cultural norms through activities. These efforts have yielded reductions in employee turn-over which in some organizations are viewed as part of successful KM initiatives (in the case of Great Plains Software), but in most the dots have yet to be connected between team building exercises and KM. The most important comment comes in the last paragraph of the article — “It requires an infusion of time, energy and commitment…”

It will be interesting to see how the IBM/Lotus led consortium will impact the Knowledge Management Consortium that has recently become affiliated with AIIM.

  • Schrage’s ‘Insight’ wasn’t knowledgeable
    Computerworld
    - I don’t often point you to a publications letters to the editor, but I agree with this persons assessment of the article by Mr. Schrage, so I had to include it in KM News. You can find the original KM News link to the Schrage article here (http://www.kmnews.com/News/1998/kmnews07121998.htm).

  • Michael Zisman executive vice president of strategy at Lotus praises Knowledge Management
    Infoworld
    - An interview with Michael Zisman that focuses on KM and why Lotus has gone after the KM market. It really doesn’t provide any new or earth shattering insight into the Lotus strategy. You will gain some understanding of why Lotus is trying to reinvent itself as a KM powerhouse. The long term questions is will organizations that don’t currently use the Notes/Domino platform adopt it as part of KM inititiatives, or will they adopt pure Internet/Web based technology solutions.

  • eRoom Integrates with Office 2000
    - At David Coursey’s Showcase ‘99 Microsoft and Instinctive announced the integration of Office 2000 and eRoom. I generally don’t comment on pre-release products, but I have been using both the Office 2000 beta and eRoom 3.0 and think the integration of the two will enable the creation of some compelling collaborative applications. Check out the information Instinctive has posted on their web site.
