Vol. 3 No. 1 – January 2000

Interesting Reading:

Here’s some articles, web sites, or books that I’ve found interesting.

    me
    - As I’ve had time to read these last few months (which hasn’t been often enough) it has been interesting to note that the hype surrounding KM has died away. I’m not sure when this happened, but I saw a noticeable decline in the Technology Trades around October (1999). Most interesting is how several of the KM consultancies and product vendors have disappeared from the KM radar screen altogether. Some instantly dropped KM in favor of a portal focus, others have just de-emphasized it. So what does all this mean? I’m not exactly sure, but what is does mean is that KM is not dead, it has simply moved to a more mature state. Yes, companies are deriving value from technology used in KM systems, but it isn’t just technology for technologies sake anymore. It also means that those that really don’t understand the true value proposition of KM have moved on to supposed greener pastures (perhaps the old line about the grass being greener over the septic tank applies?).

  • KM Gets Real
    CIO Magazine
    - Another interview with Larry Prusak of IBM. This one focuses on the next set of trends within KM. It boils down to finding the right mix between the individual and the organization. Two of the trends Larry talks about are communities of interest/practice and the process orientation of KM.

This is a list of events I’m interested in, and think you should be too. As I come across web sites that have detailed listings of events, I’ll post them here. An asterisks (*) denotes a new item. If you attend a conference that you heard about through KM News, tell the conference promoters.

Products/Tools:
I’ll try and point you to interesting products, tools, and companies that are dabbling in the KM space. A (P) after a product name indicates that it connects people to people, and an (I) indicates that it connects people to information. These categories are based on my definition of KM.

Account4 from Account4 (a division of Work Management Solutions) I, P
- Account4 is a thin-client Internet/Intranet application for tracking information about projects, customers, resources, time and expenses. Real-time access to a central database enables users to capture, search for, and deliver knowledge with convenience and ease of use. Account4 allows workgroups to collaborate in a more efficient manner, as current data and documents are instantly accessible for review, comment, and distribution. The Account4 server side components run on Windows NT with IIS and can use either SQL Server or Oracle.

If you’ve seen or are using a cool and useful product that falls into the KM space (or close to it), let me know about it, I’ll include it here and you’ll get the credit for it.
