Vol. 3. No. 3 – June 2000

Interesting Reading:

Articles, web sites, or books that I’ve found interesting.

  • Call to Action
    CIO Magazine
    - This article hits the nail on the head with respect to information pollution. Organizations are pumping information to their workers at a pace that matches the speed and complexity of today’s business environment. Is that what’s really needed? No. What knowledge workers need is information they can act on to provide value to themselves and the organization. The author proposes 8 steps to providing actionable information, not just information.

  • Knowledge Fusion
    CIO Magazine
    - An interesting article that details how the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the United States largest public power supplier, overhauled its nuclear division’s maintenance management system, creating a centralized knowledge management system that cuts time and errors out of the cycle. I’m sure that there is something we can all apply to our organizations from this article.

  • An Audit Tale
    CIO Magazine
    - An excellent article which details the benefits that Mitre Corp. derived from it’s mulit-year, $7.2 million investment in Knowledge Management. The benefits are broken down into both hard and soft benefits. An important item to note is that auditing is a continuous process, not a one time effort.

  • Knowledge Management Mistakes
    Computerworld
    - This article details 5 KM implementation mistakes and how to avoid them. I’m not sure I agree with all 5 of these mistakes, but we can learn something from these “mistakes”. I have certainly seen, and participated in a few of these mistakes myself.

  • Knowledge Broker from Black Pearl (I)
    - The Knowledge Broker is a Java based, e-market intelligence platform that applies business rules to data captured from multiple sources (existing enterprise databases and the Internet) to match buyers’ interests with sellers’ expertise taking into account goals, preferences, behaviors, and market context. The result is said to be more accurate and timely recommendations that increase the likelihood a transaction will occur at the moment of contact, and enhanced long-term customer satisfaction.
