Vol. 3 No. 4 – October 2000

Interesting Reading:
Articles, web sites, or books that I’ve found interesting.

  • Up the (E)Organization!:
    Strategy & Business – Booz-Allen & Hamilton
    - This is an incredibly interesting article on redefining the organization in the “e” world. While the runaway eBusiness hype is coming down to earth, re-inventing organizations to be more connected is more relevant than ever. I know you will all find this paper to be very useful.

  • Smart Content
    Intelligent KM
    - This article points out the value of technology in enabling KM. It specifically addresses archiving information (referred to as knowledge by the author) and how organizations can address the issue of electronically archiving important organizational information.

  • Data vs. Knowledge
    Intelligent Enterprise
    - While I found this article interesting and informative, I also see a parallel to what went on several years back when “push” technology companies latched onto the KM term to describe their wares. The author talks about text and numbers in the context of KM, implying that data is knowledge. Let’s review a long standing definition that KM News has put forth about knowledge management – data in context = information, information in action, based on individual and organization experience and experiences = knowledge. KM isn’t about any specific technologies. Technology is an enabler of KM, not KM.

  • Know Who You Know
    Computerworld
    - This article discusses some research and a product in development that helps people keep track of their social network. We all have contact managers of some sort that provide details on people we know, have met, or have some sort of link to. The problem is that it’s generally stored in a way that doesn’t make it easy for us to make connections. If this tool that these AT&T Labs researchers are working on actually makes it into the real world, we may be able to more easily make those connections.

  • People Have To Come First
    Information Week
    - With the drop in the NASDAQ and the weekly news of “dot bombs” closing and downsizing, the tight labor market may be loosening. That doesn’t diminish the value of working hard to keep your employees happy. This article sums up nicely several ways that organizations can retain their most valuable asset – their employees.

  • Digital certificates are gaining ground in business
    InfoWorld
    - Why did I include an article on Digital Certificates in this KM newsletter? Well since I define KM as “connectedness”, a major issue in building KM systems is how to secure organizational knowledge and “know” who is using and accessing that organizational knowledge. With the enactment of the E-Sign legislation this past summer in the United States, digital certificates (signatures) will become much more relevant to KM. Digital Certificates don’t exist in a vacuum, and in a future edition of KM News I hope to highlight how Directory Services, XML, and other technologies can advance KM initiatives to a new level.

  • Knowledge Management: Pumping Up the Corporate Brain
    CFO.com
    - It is interesting and encouraging to see KM being addressed in a magazine for senior financial executives. The article provides a glimpse into how one company, Bow Street views KM. While not everyone will agree with the Bow Street CFO’s “definition” of KM, I think it is important to say that the ultimate definition of KM is what the organization deems it to be.
