Please wake up corporate security, privacy officers, and Luddite CEO's and CIO's and DON'T ban social media in the workplace. What's the point? You're improving productivity, saving people from themselves or saving the organization from some boogeyman?

As this eweek article points out social media tools may not be ready for prime time enterprise deployments but they can add value.
Based on experience I'd say blocking access to social tools just makes your staff mad. So why spread ill will. I do believe that organizations should develop reasonable usage policies that provide staffs with an understanding of the boundaries of usage.

hype cycle
TechCrunch had a great post way back in August on hype cycles. I've had this post in draft mode for months and thought it was time to let it loose...
TechCrunch Hype
What is interesting is that TechCrunch places social computing on it's way down to the trough of disillusionment while social network analysis is on it's way up the slope of enlightenment. So does that mean that there really is an understanding and embracing of Value Networks or that people just love cool graphs showing connectedness?

Micromanagers
The corollary to the item I posted in September about emotional intelligence is the Micromanager. A cancer if ever there was one on the organization and social life in general. The micromanager has a pathology that causes great harm to individuals, organizations and groups.
I came across a quote in an article by Alan Deutschman in FastComay - Is Your Boss a Psychopath?, that really struck a cord... "
Psychopaths succeed in conventional society in large measure because few of us grasp that they are fundamentally different from ourselves. We assume that they, too, care about other people's feelings. This makes it easier for them to "play" us. Although they lack empathy, they develop an actor's expertise in evoking ours. While they don't care about us, "they have an element of emotional intelligence, of being able to see our emotions very clearly and manipulate them," says Michael Maccoby, a psychotherapist who has consulted for major corporations."
That sums it up pretty well. Yes, I am implying that a micromanager is a psychopath. You can not act in a normal fasion with a micromanager, the rules of the game are not the same.

LotusLive
IBM has annoucned LotusLive, its answer to collaboration in the cloud. This is what IBM has been calling Bluehouse.
On paper LotusLive looks interesting. Can they pull all these disparate technologies together into something that provides seemless powerful user experience? I think we will have to wait and see.
